Managing IT support for scientific research presents unique challenges that go far beyond traditional enterprise IT. This session explores the processes Science IT and HHD IT (or ISS) Helpdesks have implemented to navigate the complex landscape of supporting cutting-edge research, from handling the integration of research labs into Penn State to enabling unique needs (or outside of norms). Through personal experiences and practical examples, we will examine effective approaches to support diverse research requirements while ensuring security, compliance, and performance, all while keeping your team’s well-being in mind.
Key Focus Areas:
- The approach to facilitate "unique" needs and ideas from our researchers.
- Designing support workflows that balance IT Support Specialists bandwidth and researchers needs.
- Differentiating the approach needed to enable the IT needs of research versus enterprise.
- Implementing systems that allow flexibility for unique needs but remain compliant with policy.
Learning Outcomes: - Understand the differences in the approaches needed to meet the IT needs of research versus enterprise.
- Implement effective strategies for managing similar needs in the attendee's own college/unit.
- Design support workflows that balance security and policy requirements with researcher needs.
- Understanding the complexity of supporting IT research needs and how much flexibility is needed.
