A frequent request graphic designers receive is to create an accessible “org chart,” usually presented as a tree diagram. If the diagram is embedded as an image within a PDF, it is theoretically possible to repair it within Adobe Acrobat, but the process is time consuming and needs to be repeated for every revision.

This session will discuss other ways to represent information in an “org chart” tree diagram so that they are “born accessible,” easy to maintain and visually attractive. Options include HTML outlines with clickable levels, Word outlines with headings and tables, PowerPoint slide templates and InDesign templates with styles.  This session will also discuss the challenges of tree diagrams for many audiences and why providing alternatives to tree diagrams helps multiple user groups digest information within a tree diagram.

Objectives

  • Explain the challenges of maintaining and remediating a tree-style diagram.
  • Discuss challenges of mainstream audiences for using a complex tree diagram.
  • Review other options of presenting the same information in HTML, Word, PowerPoint and InDesign.
  • Explain how same accessible design principles can be applied to other types of infographics.
