You have determined a business need for your organization.  How do you determine the right solution to meet that need?  After selecting a solution, how do you ensure that your deployment plans meet the needs of your stakeholders?  Pilots help project teams incorporate outside perspectives to improve the quality of their deliverables.

In this session, we will describe how pilots differ from proofs of concept; discuss the two types of pilots (decision and pre-deployment) and when to use which; and do a deep dive into two projects that involved pilots to highlight how Penn State IT has collaborated with the broader University IT community to improve project outcomes through these pilots.

Outcomes:

  • Attendees will learn about different types of collaborative evaluation methods - proofs of concept, decision pilots, and pre-deployment pilots - the pros and cons of each, and when to best use them to make a business decision.
  • Attendees will be provided case study information of two Penn State IT projects that included pilots, and how feedback from University IT resources during these pilots improved the quality of the project deliverables.
